Jink Ink

Evenin' Everyone

Once, I went to pick a friend up from his Tae-Kwon-Do class (a martial art similar to Karate), and there was a person visiting that day from Korea. This guy was something like an 8th rank black belt, one of the highest ranks achievable. Well he was giving a demonstration to the class, and I had arrived early so I got to see it. He was so fast that I could hear some of the moves, and I don't mean running around or jumping, I mean when he would stand still and just move his arms. You could really hear the rush of the air around him.

So what I'm getting at is that if a mere human can achieve such a feat, it should not be a problem for someone such as Jink to go "pop".

I finally got a chance to read Jink #2 last night. Wow! Jink made number 2 on my Elfquest Series Ranking list with her premier. With Jink #2, Jink has now taken over number 1 (pushing Shards to number 2).

This series has the real feel of classic Elfquest, a real compliment to the writer and artists. I know Wendy is helping him, but John Ostrander really deserves credit for the quality of this series' story.

Now, as much as I like the series, I do have two nits to pick.

Nit #1: the artist made one mistake when drawing Jink. When Jink was climbing the rope, she had five fingers even though she was in her true elf form. Minor nit, but I did notice it. (Ah, but was she in elf form at that moment? - RP)

Nit #2: elves may be open about sex, but they do have some discretion. I know Jink has a thing for psionicists, but I would think Jink could hold back long enough and not make love right in the middle of the street. Even when Leetah was extremely excited after helping Redlance and Nightfall recognize, she had the discretion to take Cutter behind some rocks before satisfying her need. (Nah, that was for the benefit of Standards and Practices. - RP)

And yes, even though I am in love with Jink, I will resist the urge to ask how I can become telepathic! I really want to compliment the entire Jink crew. This series will definitely be remembered as one of the best Elfquest stories published.

I just picked up my second issue of "Jink". In the past I gave your 'other' titles a few issues to see if I would be interested, and to see if the standards I was used to seeing from up there in ole' Poughkeepsie was in each title.

"Jink" #1 I wasn't too sure about. Being in the future caused me to wonder. But then, "I will. I won't. I will. I won't.. kreakkreakkreak" I fell on my butt laughing. Wonderfully done. I love the direction "Jink" seems to be taking. Sometimes four fingers, sometimes five; does absolutely what she wants, has her own agenda; excellent background, with just enough 'old' Elfquest to remind the reader the story is still dealing with the same world.

Well done. I collect some comics; yours. I buy your title (and a few from Viz). Period.

(On the side. If you don't mind receiving E-mail, could you please include your E-mail address on every letters page? I had to go through many old issues to find where Richard mentioned the address. Thanks.)

Well, JINK #2 wasn't what I expected.

Jink Theory #41 (I think that's the right number) Regarding the bloodsong -- I think that when Jink is in her human form, she's really, truly, fully human. Admittedly, a superfast, ultra-agile human with a proficiency at telepathy that most humans don't, apparently, share, but fully human nevertheless. I don't think Winnowill is fully human in her human form. If she was, I can't imagine why she would have started to lose her human form -- eyes, ears, fingers -- when she was attacked in SHARDS #3. (Three? I think three...) Logically, the form should have stayed until she deliberately reformed herself as an elf. However, since Winny was only (what? creating an elaborate illusion?), joining with the Djun nearly 'cost him his soul.'

Jink, on the other hand, obviously doesn't have a problem with sex and delicate human sensibilities, so it seems to me that she can't possibly be maintaining her elfin self under an illusion of humanity. Further, that could explain why, at the museum, she is clearly four-fingered before her pointed ears are visible -- self-shaping isn't instantaneous. It's quick, I'll grant you that -- Timmain's shifting in the Palace took place in moments -- but it's not instantaneous.

Besides, four fingers are less likely to be noticed than pointy ears are. Took me... months to even notice that the elves were four-fingered, when I started reading EQ. But the ears were hard to miss.

I rather liked the implications of calling Kullyn a "twedge". Very much like calling someone a Judas. Betrayal, fear, disgust -- I'd personally add a bit of admiration in there, but it doesn't really fit -- are all rolled into that little word. Very nice.

I wanted to see the faces in the tree, too, darn it. And I didn't even notice the Scroll in the museum... wonder what that means. I've been assuming all this time that our heroes over in SHARDS are gonna win. Oh dear.

All right, on another note, with regards to Jink's parents. Richard (or Wendy) said, at some point, that Jink was a descendant of the chief's line. Or, at least, I'm reasonably certain of that, but I can't remember what interview/article I read that in. But anyway. If Skywise and Timmain are her parents, does that make Jink chief's blood, or not? I mean, I suppose that technically it does, but blast it, that's following the letter of the law, and not the spirit, if you ask me.

Catie

We don't suspect that Jink is particularly interested in chiefdom, no matter who her parents were. But we could be wrong! - See you in 30! - RP
