Y'know, this is not at ALL what I expected out of ELFQUEST.

I've been a comic fan for more then half of my life now, starting out with the rather childish (but fairly concise- I mean, where else can you find a full and complete story in just five pages?) old Harvey "Richie Rich" comics, slowly graduating to the mainstream Marvel, then over to DC, then sending feelers out and around the whole comic industry. And somehow, whenever I decide to pick up or drop titles, ELFQUEST, which is always on the bubble, barely loses out.

But then along came Gen Con '94, the big gaming convention held in Milwaukee, WI, every August. What made last year's con special was the incredible list of comic book writers and artists. And there was one booth, just off to the side of the DC table, which caught my eye each day: that of Kim Yale, wife to "Jink" writer John Ostrander (and a heck of a writer in her own right. If memory serves, she's got the "Kahvi" mini-series coming up soon, yes?). We spent a couple of days discussing comics in general and the lack of quality titles on the market nowadays. But when I came back for the final day of the con, she told me about JINK and what you had planned.

And so far, I'm not disappointed in the least. After two issues, I can already see some of the trademarks of the Warp Graphics line: clear, concise art, pleasing to the eye, that truly adds to the story instead of takes away from it; a full, developed story, rather than the constant 22-24 page fight scenes that most of today's mainstream comics have become; and an almost uncanny penchant for humor with timing that rivals today's top comedians. For once, an ELFQUEST title is going to stay on my list of monthlies- the only thing close to an independent that's staying.

So far, the conflicts between Kullyn and Jink have been set up rather well. Kullyn, with the girl he's always "settled" for, falls in love with a woman he may possibly never truly have. Jink, the last (?) descendant of the fabled elves, always ready for action in some way, shape, or form (quite literally, if the shapeshifter rumors are true). And Kullyn's cousin, willing to grab power at any cost: friends, family, possibly the security of the entire realm of Abode. Characters that will, over time, be fleshed out a bit more instead of just stereotypes. However, I do hope Jink's fleshed out more over the next few issues; for a title that's her own, we've seen an awful lot of Kullyn Kenn to this point. Hopefully now that she's been "found" we'll get on to the meat of the story that I've been primed for, first by Kim's baiting of the hook, then by John and David's story and art.

Congratulations, ladies end gentlemen.

You've hooked another one. Chris

Hi there! Here, in no special order, are some of my thoughts and wild surmises about the latest issue to come out of the Warp-mind.

Re: Jink's heritage: while I think the idea of a Winnie connection would be truly revolutionary, I'm still leaning toward the probability of a Skywise-Ember heritage: Skywise because of her coloring and headband and sex drive, Ember because her hair's shape and her wild spirit and sense of joy in life. Or maybe I'm just being a hopeless romantic because these two seem so well matched for each other in HIDDEN YEARS - like young Cutter and Skywise, but with the possibility of offspring. Also, on pages 4 and 5 of JINK #2, the elfin Jink seems much shorter and more compact than her human form - more like a Wolfrider than an old-timer like Winnie or Timmain.

Has anyone else noticed the sun-shaped earring that the Doma is wearing? She reminds me a lot of Savah in terms of her hair, demeanor, and power. Could she have some connection to the Sun Villagers or Rayek?

If anyone has a connection to Winnie, I'm betting on Jerrod. He's already a Black Snake (perhaps an organization begun or currently controlled by Winnie) and he's got the ruthlessness and ambition that she seems to look for in her lover-victims. Yet, he's not a black-hair. Still, that reflection of the snake in his eyes makes me shiver.

Jink's parents -- new theory.

C'mon. It's obvious. Skywise + Kahvi = Jink.

I mean, sure it's possible she's not descended from any of the elves in the other EQ comics, but if she *is* then it has to be Kahvi with Skywise. I mean, look at her personality! I'll bet $1,000,000 on it. Unless I lose, in which case I bet ten cents. Guess we'll find out.

BTW why does everyone keep saying the creepers call their God/Emperor flagrant sir when I distinctly read f*r*agrant sir. It seems that they are smell oriented. I mean, check out that bubble bath he was sitting in! And the interiors of their ships are so dark, sight wouldn't be their major sense - unless they use infrared??

And their ships, they're organic beings! Probably related very closely to the creepers, by their appearance.

Ooooh. this is getting good.

Subj: Oh no, not this.

It has finally happened. Not once in the 15 or so years I've been an EQ and related titles fan has there ever been a technical glitch of this proportion. How can it be possible?

I refer to issue #2 of JINK. We see it only briefly, but that's enough. Blue Mountain--standing!!

Now this may be a bit of a spoiler for those who have not read SIEGE AT BLUE MOUNTAIN, but... Didn't Blue Mountain come crashing down as a pile of so much Eggshell? (Yup - RP) Wasn't it leveled nearly flat with the surrounding landscape? (Yup - RP) Finally, wouldn't many thousands of years of erosion have reduced the remains even further? (Yup - RP) Yet here in this latest issue it stands tall and proud.

This cannot be! Faithfully I have searched for small details such as this, trusting in the great Warp editor to catch all problems before they emerged. Yet now it seems he has missed one. (Nope - RP) Well, nobody is perfect.

Perhaps I am mistaken. Maybe there is an explanation. Maybe I dreamed it. I guess I'll just have to keep tuned in.
