LETTERS (Rebel Rousing)

Rebel Rousing

THE REBELS kicks @$$!! I consider myself to be a comic book connoisseur, and I must say that your comic has inspired me. Recently I had become jaded toward all the "superhero" books. THE REBELS is a refreshing, and exciting twist on familiar, well loved stories (ELFQUEST). I got hooked on ELFQUEST the first time I read KINGS OF THE BROKEN WHEEl, and SIEGE AT BLUE MOUNTAIN, but this variation on The World of Two Moons is spectacular! Delfin Barral's pencils are excellent, as are Bern Harkins' stories! Keep up the great work!

P.S. I was wondering if THE REBELS is available for subscription? Any possibility that you guys might send me some signed artwork, or something!

Well, it's far more likely to be "or something," but hey. If you write to the individual artists who work on this (or any other) title, you never know. As for subscriptions, take a look at the ad in this very issue for the answer you want! - RP

You did it again. This time, I'm not even sure if you meant to. For the umpteenth time in as many months, you people at Warp Graphics have brought home a fact of life I try to avoid: mortality. Yes, we all have to die. It's a fact, but like Skywise, I wonder why we can't say when. And through Skywise, you have brought death to a head again.

I'm talking about REBELS #1. You all know what I mean. The Lodestone. Gestrelle dug it up some years before and has now given it to Chandra, who of course has no idea of the worth that small "trinket" carries. As we all know, Skywise takes that thing everywhere. In order for Gestrelle to have dug it up, Skywise must be dead.

Skywise--the Wolfrider who spurned his wolf-blood so as to have forever to find answers to all of his questions. Skywise, now dead. (Presumed anyway.) But, no, I can't even hope that it is merely presumed. It is a fact. A cold, hard fact.

Death is a fact, too. One that I hate.

REBELS is much deeper than the surface story, isn't it? Close to the final page, Richard hints that through the Rebels we will learn of what really happened to the elves. I hope they have not all died, even though, by giving the Lodestone to Chandra, I am almost sure that most, if not all, of the elves we know in the "present" have passed on. After all, most of the others have wolf-blood in them.

As much as I want to learn about the mysterious disappearance of the elves in Abode's future, another part of me dreads it.

This new path you've started will not be an easy one. But not even I can say it is unnecessary.

Some quick thoughts on THE REBELS #1.

Hmm...so JINK isn't the only sci-fi title the Warp Graphics crew will be springing on us, eh? I don't suppose I'll be the only one wondering if any JINK-REBELS crossovers are planned!

So far, this one looks a lot like ELFQUEST meets STAR TREK... only done a lot more seriously than that amateur-level ELFTREK series done about fifteen-odd years ago by a small press publisher whose name escapes me. Cosmo looks to be a cross between Cutter and James T. Kirk...and while Scorch bears precious little resemblance to Spock, he does make an excellent substitute for Skywise in this analogy! It takes a bit more to see Chandra as Leetah, however!

One thing I know for sure: that character Scorch calls "bug" is obviously descended from the Preservers, and don't try telling me any differently!

Actually, this "on-the-run-from-a-corrupt-government" scenario is a bit more STAR WARS than STAR TREK. So is Chandra your Princess Leia, and the "bug" character Yoda? I'm getting a headache...

Well, anyway, whatever the original source materials were, so far I find this series just engaging as all the other ELFQUEST material and thus I'll be supporting it regularly.

SAY! Isn't this Bern Harkins the same one who did DEBBIE DOES DALLAS from Aircel some years ago! (I wonder which of us will be more embarrassed by that question?)

Oh, Berrrrnnnnnnnn????? - RP

I just wanted to write in and tell you how much I enjoyed the first issue of the REBELS. I loved the art, it reminded me somewhat of the old Star Blazers and Robotech cartoons. I was kind of afraid that I wasn't going to like this new series but you guys did a fantastic job.

I have a few questions for you. In one of your old interviews it says that ELFQUEST has a definite ending. Is this definite ending the Rebels and Jink? What happened to the ELFQUEST trading cards? And whatever happened to BLOODSONGS?

Sean Moriarty

The "definite ending" that we've talked about for years is not eiher Jink or The Rebels. These two titles take place many years after that - but as you can see, the ending we're talking about obviously doesn't mean an end to ELFQUEST stories!

The cards are still in the works, and Bloodsongs, our adults-only collection of ELFQUEST stories (don't make a face - there's a wide difference between erotica and pornography) has gone on the back burner for a bit while Wendy is involved with the animated film. - RP

The Lodestone? Chandra has the Lodestone? Well, Skywise must be dead (sadly). I know he would never part from it. I keep seeing things from elf past--one half of the scroll, Cutter's key, the Lodestone, the Little Palace, and the symbol of the Hoan-G'Tay-Sho. I assume that Rose is some mutated or evolved Preserver. She talks like one and looks like one. (Actually, she looks like Petalwing to be specific.) Are the Neverending the main enemy here, too? Will there ever be a JINK/REBELS crossover? Oh well, I guess it's too early to ask that one.

Never to early to ask! Keep those cards, letters and interplanetary wrapstuff coming in, and we'll see you in 45! - RP
